One day, Wife-Lady looks at me and says “Pickle” out of the blue. I was confused. She decided to keep saying it from time to time. I maintained confusion. Apparently, it became my nickname. No reason. I happened to write an old time-y melody that could easily be turned into stride piano, ragtime, or a Dixieland quintet piece. The music made me picture a circus in the 1920’s, and “The Flying Pickle” just seemed like a good name for an act in this circus. Steel Pan didn’t quite fit the circus theme, but if I’m being completely honest, now I want to hear this piece done in Dixie.
