You may be picturing an avocado pit with a toothpick holding it above some water in a glass jar... starting to grow an avocado sapling in the warm, bright sunlight on a kitchen windowsill. Picturesque as that may be, Phil’s use of this term was planted deep in philosophical dinner discussion. A colleague and friend who founded the band Steel Accent, Phil also plays pans with Changes In Latitudes. He was kind enough to feature the title track from Dedications in a video spotlight a few years ago. One night we were eating dinner, and Phil asked if we knew how to tell if an avocado was ripe. At first, I thought he was setting up a joke. Realizing he truly didn’t know, we all shared our successes and failures between firm avocados and the gray root mush that often takes over. With a chuckle, he concluded, “I guess avocados have about a 10 second window between ripe and rotten!” Thus, he coined a highly useful phrase: “The Avocado Window.”
