The Askew Ska Excuse

from The Panoramic View by Panoramic View Steel Drums

/

about

In short, ska is both the Jamaican version of jazz, and the predecessor to reggae. In an effort to blend my interests, my combo frequently morphs through these styles. While many people don’t understand exactly what ska music is, the genre creates a vibe and energy that draws attention. During my tenure leading this combo from the drum set, I also landed a job as the drummer for regional ska phenomenon The Copacetics. My jazz combo took a gig blending members of The Copacetics with guests from some other internationally known ska musicians at a new venue called Askew. What started as a jazz night turned into an excuse to play “Jamaican jazz” (a.k.a. ska). Thus, “The Askew Ska Excuse.”
