Greek mythology introduces a single beast comprised of different animals – originally a lion, goat and snake. A difficult piece, this musical beast takes a 12 bar blues form with heavy bebop influence, cycling through three different written variations of the head. Reading the Real Book, any musician can notice discrepancies between short hand transcriptions on a page compared to an album version, dozens of renditions, or thousands of live performances of a given jazz standard. What can we take away from this? Jazz heads are untamable, and each time around the form gives you the chance to express a different exploration of a single body of work.
