Anna was my first gateway to history and culture. An immigrant following World War II, she made a life next door to my childhood home. She embodied love, and acted as the 4th grandparent I never had. When I got off the school bus, I often went straight to Anna’s house to tell her about my day, raid her everlastingly abundant candy dish, and watch as the birds ate their “candy” at the feeder outside her bay window. Her yard had beautiful gardens with flowers and vegetables that she shared with us. We would jump through her little red fence during games of tag, or shout greetings to her from our tree fort next to her woodshed. She was family, friend, and neighborhood saint rolled into one example of humanity. She had a mind for everyone, and everyone loved her in return.
