In 2014, a fantastic ska/reggae band called The Slackers was playing down the road. As a local music scene supporter, I made sure to catch the opening bands. That was the first time I saw The Copacetics. Less than 2 months later, I was at the same club to catch The Skatalites, and The Copacetics were on stage again. I became a fan. My friend Alexa (see “Flashback”) and I decided to catch the band again in Newport. By their next concert, I was inducted into the band. 8 years later, I’m happy to say I’ve moved through the ranks of percussion, steel pan, and drums. We’ve traveled some, recorded, and overall had a really good musical vibe. One of the things I respect most about The Copacetics is their attention to history and culture. They pay tribute to the origins of ska and reggae. Now an adjunct member, working with this band means jumping into a sonic time machine that constantly lands in the old school groove of 1960’s Jamaica.
