Sometime around sophomore year of high school, Chris and I met through church youth group, despite living several towns apart. One morning as we made pancakes following a sleepover, I found out his birthday was coming up. “No way!” I exclaimed. “That’s the day before my birthday!” His mother slipped out of the room for a moment, returning with a tiny 17-year-old newspaper clipping of our birth announcements. Our parents had met in the hospital. Completely independent of their meeting, Chris and I were introduced by a mutual friend 16ish years later. Another 16 years later, Chris served as the best man in my wedding. Why the song title, you ask? Chris never let chores get in the way of hanging out, but he also never let hanging out get in the way of chores. He has a dash of Tom Sawyer in his personality. Showing up to his house, I never knew if I had to paint the fence, clean the pool, or set up holiday decorations. I didn’t mind helping around the house because it meant spending time together. Even so, some tasks seemed more designed for us - like taping comic strips to the wall. The best, of course, were the video game tasks. At that time in our life, video games were our job! (Aren’t they still?) My specialty: Tony Hawk Pro Skater. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the THPS soundtrack, it was my generation’s gateway to ska music. My older brother had already introduced me to some great ska music, but the THPS soundtrack became a staple album in our collection. These experiences inspired “Nintendo Taskmaster.”
