Eric Hates On Jazz

from The Panoramic View by Panoramic View Steel Drums

about

As the pianist for our church worship band, I often play around with textures, including repeating ostinato patterns to see how far I can stretch them. One day Eric, another band member, flipped out about this 5 note riff with minimalist rhythmic adaptations that I was looping underneath a song. In fact, as I recorded the riff, he shared his frustrations:

“I have a really good idea. What if you played the same thing over and over and over and called it jazz? That’s what you should do.” (Pause) “Sorry... I really hate on jazz music.” (Pause) “I think it’s funny when like...”

That’s the end of the recording, but I went home and penned the tune with the title “Eric Hates Jazz.” Upon showing him the tune, he insisted that he doesn’t “hate jazz,” but he “hates ON jazz.” In the case of this version, I suppose Eric Hates On Latin Jazz.
